DONATION EXPANDS YMCA TEEN SCHOLARSHIP FOR AT RISK TEENS

The DeVos-Blum Family YMCA took a group of young athletes to Puerto Rico for a basketball trip that combined competition with cultural immersion and community connection. Despite challenges, the experience helped the boys build friendships, explore new environments, and grow in character, highlighting the impact of YMCA programs and community support.

Captain Dennis Farrell, a former YMCA camper and youth sports participant, credits the Y’s family-oriented environment for shaping his values of teamwork and leadership. After a distinguished 32-year career in the U.S. Navy with multiple honors, he reflects on how the lessons learned at the YMCA stayed with him throughout his service.

Since 2019, the YMCA has become a vital part of this family’s life, providing a welcoming and supportive environment as they fostered over 15 children. The Y offers flexibility, inclusive programs, and a sense of stability, giving each child opportunities to stay active, build confidence, and feel part of a community. For this growing family, the YMCA is more than a facility—it’s a home away from home.
