Get caught up in the rhythm of the music at the Y! Zumba is one of the most popular group exercise classes the Y has to offer and is also known as the “most fun”!

What is Zumba?

Zumba is an aerobic fitness program featuring moves inspired by various forms of Latin music. Quite literally, you are able to dance your way into shape! We talked to Group Fitness Instructor, Kelli Robin from the DeVos-Blum Y to learn more.

What should someone expect at a Zumba Class?

“You should expect to sweat and have fun at Zumba! Each song has an easy to follow choreography routine. You may get lost your first class, I know I was! But don’t worry, the more you come to the classes the more you’ll get the hang of it! But honestly, Zumba is not about getting all of the moves ‘right’, it’s about having fun and leaving the class feeling great!”

By regularly attending Zumba, you can expect to:

  • Burn major calories
  • Make friends and join a community
  • Build cardiovascular endurance
  • Improve heart health
  • Lose weight
  • Have a better mind-body connection

If You’ve Never Tried Zumba Before…

Don’t worry, you can have two left feet and still try a Zumba class. There is no dance experience required to join, just bring a positive attitude and plenty of energy! You should prepare for your first class by:

  • Wearing comfortable, functional clothes that you can move freely in
  • Arriving a little early to let the instructor know it’s your first time

“The best advice I got before taking my first Zumba class was to remember that nobody is judging you. Actually, nobody is even watching you! Everyone in class is working on their own personal solo, so you go on with your bad self! Zumba is a judgment-free zone, so leave your fears at home!” advised Robin.

Why Give Zumba a Try?

Beyond strengthening your cardiovascular health, Zumba gives participants a great sense of mind-body connection and even a sense of community. “You’ll see members of our Zumba classes hanging out together outside of the classes all the time,” said Joan Joens, Peter Blum Y’s Membership Director.

Zumba is open to all fitness levels and included in your membership! New to the Y? You can try a class two times for free. Find a Zumba class today!
