Hula Hoop

These two look alike to you?

Meet Captain Dennis Farrell of the United States Navy. In the late 70’s, Captain Farrell was enrolled in our Y’s sports and summer camp programs, and was state hula hoop champion at just six years old! If you have been to the Boca or Boynton YMCA in the last few months you have probably seen him as a young boy on our entry doors. We caught up with him recently while he was visiting the Peter Blum Family YMCA.

“My fondest memories of the YMCA are the fun sports and family atmosphere. It was great to play and have fun in a welcoming and family-oriented environment,” shares Captain Farrell.

Impressively, he has completed seven extended deployments overseas throughout his 32-year Navy career and has earned numerous prestigious awards including the Legion of Merit (two awards), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), and Navy Commendation Medal (five awards) just to name a few.

Although he’s been deployed around the globe and stationed in many different locations, Boca Raton has always remained home.

“I carried the lessons learned from the YMCA and the family-oriented culture throughout my Naval Career. As a Naval Officer and Commanding Officer of two warships, I always stressed teamwork and the importance of developing a family atmosphere, where everyone cared for each other. A winning organization works as a team and cares for each other as family... things the YMCA inspires!”

Captain Farrell, YOU inspire us! We thank you for your service and your continued support of our YMCA!
